Shelter from the storm - Original Painting
Contemporary Acrylic Painting on Canvas
Size 1016mm x 762mm
This painting is a social commentary piece on some of the problems we currently face in the world. It also pays homage in a small way to George Orwell and his visionary novel, 1984.
Before I started putting paint down, I took some time to think about issues we see daily; war, conflict, social and economic injustice, environmental issues, globalism, people in power using fear as a tool to manipulate and control society, the selective reporting of mainstream media and a worrying trend towards totalitarianism. Quite a lot to consider!
I have included a lot of symbolism within the painting, most of which I will leave open to interpretation, but I feel the main themes of the painting are in relation to a breakdown in society, standing against corruption and oppression and not allowing our individual freedoms to be stripped away. It's also promoting critical thinking, forming educated opinions and being able to express those opinions.
On first look, the painting may look a little militant, but there is no intent to promote hate or aggression, in fact the opposite is true, this piece is coming from a place of concern and love, with my hope being that the viewer will consider the themes within the painting, ask question of themselves and others, take a deeper look at the issues we are facing and maybe with a little more understanding, as individuals and society in general, we can affect a positive change.
